Everyone's An Underdog

If you were a kid born in the late ’80s/early ’90s and you were asked the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”, the answer would be something like “a professional athlete”, “rock star”, “movie star”, or something in entertainment. Other possible professions would be things like a doctor, policeman, or something that helps people.

As we grew up, the jobs that made their way onto the scene were things to do with computers, engineering, or accounting. Possibly something driven by making money. In the back of our heads was the hope that we had a hidden talent that might bring us some glory in entertainment or maybe, just maybe, a growth spurt that would make us fast AF (as %&#@).

Fast forward to 2026. Pandemics and AI are threatening everything… except sports, it seems. Let’s be honest: everything else is replaceable. It feels like job security has never been lower.

Engineering and accounting are largely based on formulas. Doctors look at symptoms and make educated guesses. Entertainment is no longer long-form movies that took years to develop and plan, but rather 30-second slop that will be forgotten in less time than the length of the video. A large part of the music we hear feels like lazy writing with up-tempo beats ideal for social media reels.

With the constant search for validation from people we don’t know, our desire to become doctors or policemen started dying. We are worshippers of the person in the mirror. Long gone are the days of being a pillar of the community. It feels like we are no longer aiming for longevity or planting proverbial trees we will never enjoy the shade of.

It feels like the only thing that has stood the test of time is professional sports. I can’t see AI replacing Eben Etzebeth. Just saying.

The outcome in sport is unpredictable. Just like in life. There is always a way for the underdog to win.

Deep down, we are all searching for hope. With everything changing in our world, there seems to be more uncertainty than ever before. I do not think the answers are found in one more podcast, video, or book. It might just be found in silence.

I know the world is loud and uncertain, but if the storms within are not properly navigated and the monsters tamed, victory over your soul is easily won.

Once again, go for a walk, be silent, embrace the unknown.

It is just a thought.
