There is no bigger heartbreak than a seven-year-old boy finding out his thirteen-year-old crush has a boyfriend. It is the first step in learning that the only thing that can change the outcome of the situation is if you were born earlier. No biggie.

No greater, unexecuted plans were ever made in your head (and backed by your heart) to convince the girl that a six-year gap is not that big of a deal and that you have the means to be the man who will be able to look after her. With no internet and little to no reading experience, the plan is unrealistic and doomed to fail. But… we must try.

In those moments of heartbreak (however big or small) and helplessness in pursuing an outcome that can’t be reached due to circumstances far beyond the understanding and control of a seven-year-old, we begin learning to mask our emotions and play it off as ‘fine’, because admitting to failure at the ripe age of seven is just not acceptable.

To be honest, we all know that the prospect of this relationship between a seven-year-old boy and thirteen-year-old girl is a dream so unrealistic with zero chance of making it.

But… what if it works?

That is the question that fuels most insane adventures. What if it works? These four words have all the potential for great outcomes. The heartbreak and failure? That becomes the fictional house we put on the line, to spin the roulette wheel with the hope that the outcome is paid back 36-fold. Honestly, if you get your heart broken, it is worth it because you tried.

Although, in the same breath, I want to say play it safe and don’t chase something that might break you…

Nah… Screw it! Be the seven-year-old boy chasing the thirteen-year-old girl.

Dreams are unrealistic and the outcomes, unpredictable.

You are meant to pay a high price to achieve them.

Nothing worth having ever costs us nothing.

But… what if it works?

One of my favourite quotes from a poem of Erin Hanson is: “ what if i fall. Oh my darling what if you fly.”
